Position Summary
This position supports the Office of General Counsel and the Director of Compliance and Risk Management in working collaboratively with members of the New Business Department to respond to all new business and assist with ongoing risk management initiatives. By utilizing a solid understanding of basic litigation concepts, business organizations and financing concepts, the Conflicts Attorney is called upon to make and communicate difficult decisions, handle multiple complex situations, and produce high quality work while under pressure.
The Conflicts Attorney reviews new Firm business for potential ethical issues and client worthiness. The Conflicts Attorney works with all Firm personnel, both legal and operational, to ensure compliance with applicable professional conduct standards. The New Business Department collaborates daily with other Firm departments to maintain accurate client/matter information, respond to requests for information/proposals, and facilitate the resolution of potential conflicts of interest. When necessary, this position provides backup for non-exempt Department members to respond to after-hours, weekend, and other rush requests. This is a full-time position that requires regular and predictable on-site or remote attendance. This position will perform other related duties as assigned.
Essential Functions
New Business Conflicts Analysis: In collaboration with Director of Risk Management, conducts independent review of all potential new Firm business, reactivation of existing Firm matters, and introduction of new parties to existing Firm Advise lawyers, paralegals, and other staff on conflict of interest and related ethical issues arising from this analysis.
Waivers: Advise regarding the need for conflict of interest waivers, collaborate with Department staff to draft, send, and track receipt of waivers.
Ethical Walls: Identify requisite ethical walls arising from new business or new hire conflicts analysis and work with Conflicts Counsel and Department staff to construct ethical
Engagement Letters: Assist with drafting engagement letter sections as needed, review engagement letter drafts, and assist legal staff with sending/tracking engagement letters via
Innovation: Recommend process/service improvements, solutions, policy changes and/or major variations from established policy to better meet the needs of both internal and external
Leadership: Ensure that services are delivered effectively and efficiently; ensure compliance with Firm policies and procedures; assist in the development of office or department procedures and processes; attend regular staff meetings and training; work effectively with other departments and work groups, including timely follow-up and frequent Exercise independent judgment and discretion.
Minimum Requirements
- Juris Doctor
- Must be a barred attorney (preference for admission to WA or OR State Bar)
- 1-3 years of experience in a civil practice
- Experience in a conflicts analysis/clearance role
- Familiarity with Boolean logic and experience with conflicts database
- management
- Familiarity with Intapp Open, Intake, Conflicts, and/or Terms
- Familiarity with LexisNexis and/or Orbis
Hours / Schedule / Location:
- 40 hours per week / Monday through Friday 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM /Seattle or Portland office
- This position reports to Director of Compliance and Risk Management
- This is a full-time, exempt position that requires regular and predictable attendance
- Infrequent travel may be required for cross-office projects
- Hybrid - Remote and On-site work will be necessary for this role
Salary Range:
- $100,000 to $130,000 annually
